Ibanez Jet King JTK 2

I bought his guitar over the internet- next day delivery service as my “gig” guitar died in a warped-neck-intonation-30-year-old-second-hand-piece-o- crap- guitar-accident. I needed a guitar cheaply and quickly!!

I read some reviews on this guitar’s predecessor the JTK 1 and liked what I heard. It was also £180 so was in the “cheap” and put me on bracket! I ordered it.

I have always loved Ibanez Guitars- Paul Stanley (Kiss) played ‘em, Steve Vai played ‘em, Paul Gilbert Played ‘em- why couldn’t Andy Mack play ‘em!! I like the “unusual” shaped guitars and this “pawn shop project” guitar certainly suited that vibe.

It came straight through the post the next day and it was plugged into my Marshall 30 seconds later.

Equipment

The spec says it is a mahogany body (could be), Rosewood fingerboard, maple neck, Ibanez Super 58 pick-ups- coil splits master tone and volume.

Tune-o-matic bridge and through body stringing. Unbranded tuners seem quality enough, with six on one side- it has stayed in tune so far! And the guitar looks great. It is described as a BS (brown sunburst for all you jokers) finish and has a shape a lot like Teisco and Sivlertone guitars of the sixties.

Sounds

Firstly unplugged- basic acoustic riffing really surprised me straight away. The guitar has ace action- no fret buzz and is so easy to play. It is set up with 9 gauge Dimarzio string- quality but not for me- As I am gigging with this guitar tomorrow the strings are off and Ernie Ball “Not even slinky” 12s going on- Back in a minute.

Right. Strings on- intonation and neck sorted (easy job what a guitar) back to the acoustic strumming!! A bit louder no buzz excellent!!

I plug it in to my “gig rig” a Boss ME-50 into Marshall AVT 100 and a Marshall As100- and play the first song in our set- Roll With it Oasis- Top banana- whats going on this guitar only cost £180- I have put on new strings and a roller bridge but hey!!

I rip through the set to test the sounds and setting on my rig. The output of the guitar is excellent- sounds that is- Unbelievable how extremely versatile this guitar is. My bands set plays everything from The Eagles, the Beatles, Oasis, Primal Scream- anything goes!! The Rolling Stones riffs on this guitar sound authentic- Keef would love it!!

It covers all the basis- country jangle to classic rock- the coil splits really do change the sound and give a great vintage sound!! Sounds great clean and dirty –

Conclusion

It should be the law that everybody owns a Jet King. It is cheap and a quality guitar. I use this guitar all the time at gigs along now with my Schecter Ultra III. I used as a gig guitar on its own for 18 months- twice a week practice with the band- two gigs and sat at home.

It is the guitar I have out next to the couch when I want to just pick up and play. Cheap enough to drop and lose and all that- However I would be gutted- I love this guitar- It is suited to my style and clearly worth every single penny all 18000p!
