Boss ME-50 Review

I was after a multi fx pedal rugged enough to move around alot- use in the studio and gig regularly.  I had heard and read nothing but great reports about this Boss machine but thought it was overpriced a little.  My local guitar store had a sale on and I had some items to trade it so I bought one without testing.

My initial thoughts were abit odd to say the least- I think it was due to the fact I could not get my head around the pedal at first.  I play in a covers band as well at The Fabulous Eggs so I needed a live device and a noise making device in the studio.

The presents were alright but I soon got my head around the machine.  I think of it as a pedal board with 4 pedals.  Overdrive distortion, Chorus/vibrato/tremolo,delay and an expression pedal for wah-wah and volume etc.  The three stomp pedals also control the memory setting and tuner (which is ace by the way!!)

When split like this the machine can almost set it self- just play with it- it will come (ahem!!).  Within about twenty minutes of "playing with it I had my Keef Richards voice!  Jumping Jack Flash and Brown Sugar riffs perfect.  My rig for testing was a Schecter Ultra III plugged into a Marshall AVT 100 and A Marshall AS100D- both set clean and dry.  Using Chorus and Delays with a touch of dirt a bit of reverb I soon had the excellent Kerry Jones (Stereophonics) Dakota sound.

Vintage sounds a plenty here as well as lots of indie and nu-metal.  Playing with the Boss and saving your settings is great-  There are three pedal setting to save and 9 patches so I believe there are upwards of 30 presets at your disposal- More than enough for the gigging musician- I use 3 at the very most- Clean- Just Dirty- Filthy and the Wah wah.

My only critiques would be- the reverb is not footswitchable- as far as I can see- the fuzz setting don't fuzz or fizz enough for me but I will not be changing it at the moment!!!  Just right for the job- with the power supply and the presets set how I want em it is a very useful tool!!!
